Great Lent Week 3 Update

Hello,

I pray that you are doing well.

“The debts and sins of the human race that arose through the transgression of Your commandments at Eden, are being forgiven through lent. The doors of Paradise are opened through this lent for the salvation of Adam. Daniel observed the lent and he overcame the lions. Hananiah and other children survived the flames of fire by the lent. Elijah ascended to heaven in a fiery chariot. Joshua, son of Nun, made the sun and moon in the skies stand still. Blessed is he who observes the lent and fasting with joy. Salvation and a joyful bridal chamber open for him. Lord, open your merciful door to us. Do not give us times of hardship. Where will we knock if you close your doors before us? Have kindness towards us who are created in Your Image. Do not forsake us. Do not cast us from your presence because of the stench of our transgressions.   Have mercy on us O Lord who emancipated us by Your lent. O Messiah who fasted for us, praise be to You, to Your Father, and to Your Holy Spirit. Accept our lent and prayer, and have mercy on us in this world and in that to come.”

I wish you all the blessings of a Holy Lent!

Great Lent 2017

Hello,

Once again, the church invites us to begin the season of the Great Lent. The lent starts with the service of reconciliation. God is merciful to us and forgive our offenses when we show mercy to others and forgive those that have hurt us. To say sorry for a wrong doing or to forgive those that have hurt us is difficult and often our pride don’t allow it but without it we can’t say we are Christians, we can’t pray “Lord have Mercy”. May we be reconciled with each other as we begin this Lenten Journey. My dear brothers and sisters, forgive me a sinner, if I have hurt you in anyway by my word, action or thought. Please pray for me!

A few reminders..

Message from Fr. Bijo: Great Lent – Week 5

Almost all our young children (and adults, including me J) have seen the movie FROZEN. In it, two sisters struggle in their relationship with each other and in finding acceptance. At one point the older sister, Elsa, runs away from her village and away from her younger sister, singing these words: “Let it go, let it go … turn away and slam the door… And I’ll rise like the break of dawn …”

“Let it go” is a powerful message on our journey to the cross. We struggle with letting things go. Letting go doesn’t mean we give up or forget the past. Remember, “Falling down is part of life. Getting back up is living” You may have fallen down but get up and start living a new you. Today, God is asking you to let it go..

Let go of the past that you cannot change
Let go of the hurt that people have caused you
Let go of the anger that is consuming your thoughts and actions
Let go of someone or something that has been holding you back
Let go of the sins you once made. God has forgiven you

Let it go! let it go! Turn away and slam the door so you can take a step forward… a step towards healing. Remember the words of God through prophet Isaiah: “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” May this lenten journey help us to put away the old and focus on the new!

A Guide to the Sacrament of Holy Confession

Five Steps for a Good Confession

1. Examine your conscience.
2. Be sincerely sorry for your sins.
3. Confess your sins.
4. Resolve to amend your life.
5. After your confession, do the penance the priest assigns.

What do I do when it is my turn to confess in front of the Priest?

The person should kneel before an priest, the appointed representative of God. The priest, like anyone else, is also a sinner; but he is empowered by ordination to absolve sins. Then, he/she should draw the sign of cross and should say one of the prescribed prayers before confession.

Prayer Before Confession:

I confess to God the Father Almighty, and to His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the Holy Spirit, in the presence of Virgin Mary and all angels, prophets, seventy-two emissaries, twelve apostles and four evangelists, and confess in the faith of the three holy synods of Nicea, Constantinople and Ephesus, trusting in the honorable priestly authority conferred upon you, priest, by which you bind and retain sins. I have sinned in thought, word and deed. I repent my sins. You are the master and I am the servant. Accept me as the prodigal son. I have sinned against heaven and against you. I believe that you have authority to bind and retain sins and that you are the mediator between God and me. And I pray that you deliver me from all my sins by your priestly authority that I may obtain forgiveness. I pray that you remember me before God, in your prayers and in the holy Qurbono. Then list your sins

If time does not permit saying the prayer in the priest’s presence, say: “In the name of the Father, the Son and the holy Spirit, I confess my sins.” Then list your sins

The penitent must admit all sins, both great and small, one by one. If a sin is inadvertently omitted, the person must confess it when it comes to mind. The silence or concealing a sin is in itself a sin. After necessary counseling, the priest says the prayer of absolution. At the end of the absolution, when the priest says and draws the sign of cross on the forehead (in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) the penitent should say Amen three times.

Note: Prayers can be found at the end of both the Malayalam Qurbana Kramam as well as the English Service Books.

Ever do I render thanks to You, O Lord, and Your praise is at all times upon my lips, in accordance with the multitude of Your loving kindnesses. I beseech You, by Your grace, to confirm me in my purpose and promise that I may never return unto sin; and to grant me triumph over all my temptations that I may love You alone upon earth, and my spirit may be exalted in Your praise until that day when I shall see You in Your heaven above for ever more. Amen.

What do I do after confession?

  1. 7. While I lie and sleep in calm,

May Thy blood my keeper be.

Let my soul dwell free from qualm

In Thine image mad’st Thou me.

  1. Overshadow with Thy hand,

Me, a handicraft of Thine,

Let me in Thy fortress stand,

Mercy shielding round be mine.

  1. While my body silent lies,

May Thy pow’r its vigil keep,

Let my breath like incense rise,

T’ward Thy greatness in my sleep.

10 Let not evil touch my bed,

By Thy mother’s pleas for me,

By Thy blood atoning shed,

Satan’s harm remov—ed be.

  1. Since Thy word abides the same,

Guarded by Thy cross I’d be;

Waking, I shall praise Thy Name,

Who didst love e’en feeble me.

  1. Grant O Lord, a list’ning ear,

With desire to do Thy will;

Let Thy peace at eve be near,

Night Thy righteousness fulfill.

  1. Saviour Christ, our hearts inspire,

Thee to see effulgent bright—

Thee whose honour shines as fire,

Worshipped by all sons of light.

  1. Jesus, Saviour of the World,

Thou who dwellest in the light,

Praise we Thee for love unfurled—

Mercy, now with future bright.

  1. Lord, our God, we give Thee praise.

Praise a thousand thousand fold

Tens of thousands praises raise,

Mercy now, till time untold.

  1. Praise to thee, to thee be praise,

angels serve Thee and adore

Lord of Angels, we too raise.

Prayers and worship all the more

  1. Praise to thee who art our boast,

One true God and one alone;

9

Father, Son and Holy Ghost,

One in three, and three in one.

  1. Praise the Lord, who always hears,

prayers of feeble fold like us,

Who regards repentant tears,

as first?fruits, gifts offered thus.

  1. Earthly ones do give thee praise,

Countless as the leaves of trees.

Thee, whose glory angels raise,

serving thee as thou dost please.

  1. Setting minds above the sod,

Thank we God and exalt Him;

Who exists as one true God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit

  1. So that you may praise the Lord,

True precepts you strive after;

Flee from mortal poisons,

Such as silver, gold and wealth.

  1. Do fasting for forty days,

Caring and feeding the hungry:

Like David, son of Jesse

pray you seven times a day

  1. Prophets Moses, Elijah,

Fasted they for forty days;

Overcame the Lord his foe,

By his forty days of fast

  1. Open door of grace for us,

Now accept our humble prayers;

Like those offered long ago

from deep sea and cave and fire

  1. Thou who hearest pray’rs to Thee,

Supplications who dost heed,

Hear us reconcil—ed be,

Mercy show, and grant our need.

LEADER: O my Lord, there is no night in my life that I do not remember you. I

remember in the night that you have no sympathy over those who do not

repent of their sins. I heard the voice of Daniel telling of a fiery river flowing

from you. Woe to me that my sins are numerous. O Lord, how will I cross the

fiery river unless thy grace beseeches you and unless thy mercy is upon me.

O Lord, according to your kindness, have mercy upon me.

RESPONSE: O Lord, our Master, where can I go from before You? Where can I flee

from Your presence? If I go up to the heavens, your eternal presence is

there; if I descend to the depths, you are there. Therefore, O Lord, be kind

and have mercy upon me, and let me stand at your right side, because

nobody is righteous before you.

LEADER : O Lord we call upon you. Come to our aid, hear our supplication, and have

Karthave Ninne Anukoolamakkunnavarude

LEADER : Have mercy upon us, O Lord, by the prayers of Thy saints, who pleased

You by their lives.

RESPONSE: The prophets who spoke of You in the spirit, the Apostles who announced

Your revelation and the Martyrs who died for the love of You shall pray to

You for us; have mercy upon us. Pray for us, all ye Saints, to Him whose will

you performed, that He may remove and avert from us punishments and

rods of rage. O Lord, by their supplications and intercessions, absolve us,

and our departed ones. Amen.

LEADER: O Lord, since I have not condemned Your holy Name, do not put me to

shame. O Lord, acknowledge me before your Father, because I

acknowledge you before men. Make me worthy to enjoy Your salvation

because I ate your body and drank your blood. When you arrive in the

glorious company of your angels, remit our sins by Your mercy.

RESPONSE: The arrival of the Son of God is at hand. Like the witnessing of the apostle,

the end of the world is at the door. Blessed is he who finds mercy at the

judgment.

LEADER : O Lord, have mercy upon us and accept our service. From Your treasure

house, grant us kindness, mercy, and forgiveness of sins.

RESPONSE: O Lord, who hears our prayer and accepts our petitions, hear our prayers,

reconcile with us, and grant our petitions by Your mercy.

LEADER : O Lord, the ocean of mercy, You are a peaceful harbor for those who call

upon You. Like you lifted up Simon Peter from the ocean, lift us up from the

sinfulness of this world.

RESPONSE: O Lord, because you are impartial at judgment, we sinful ones mourn. O

Lord, by Your grace be kind and have mercy upon us at that time when the

book of life is opened and Your righteousness judges our sins. O Lord, may

Your grace appeal to Your justice and grant us forgiveness of our sins. Amen.

chariot. Joshua, son of Nun, made the sun and moon in the skies stand still.

Blessed is he who observes the lent and fasting with joy. Salvation and a

joyful bridal chamber open for him. Lord, open your merciful door to us. Do

not give us times of hardship. Where will we knock if you close your doors

before us? Have kindness towards us who are created in Your Image. Do

not forsake us. Do not cast us from your presence because of the stench of

our transgressions.

king, God the Father Almighty; and You, O Lord God, only begotten Son,

Jesus Christ; and You O Holy Spirit.

LEADER: O Lord God. Lamb of God, Son and word of the Father, who bearest, and hast

15

RESPONSE: Wash me from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sins; for I

LEADER : Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done evil before You. For Thou

in iniquity and in sins did my mother conceive me.

RESPONSE: For Thou hast desired the truth, and made known to me the mysteries of

Your wisdom. Sprinkle upon me with Your hyssop; purge me with it, and I

shall be whiter than snow.

LEADER : Fill me with Your joy and gladness, and my feeble bones shall rejoice. Turn

Your face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

RESPONSE: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew within me a right spirit. Cast

LEADER : Restore to me the joy of Your salvation; and may Your glorious spirit uphold

converted to You.

RESPONSE: Deliver me from blood—guiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and

my tongue shall extol Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my

mouth shall sing forth Your praises.

LEADER : For Thou hadst no delight in mere sacrifices; neither hadst Thou been

reconciled by mere burnt—offerings. The sacrifices acceptable to God are a

humble spirit, and a broken heart, God despises not.

RESPONSE: Do good to Zion, according to Your good pleasure, and build Thou the

walls of Jerusalem. Then wilt Thou be pleased with righteous sacrifices, and

in whole burnt offerings. Then shall they offer bullocks upon Thine altar.

may not be lost completely, but count me among your flock and make me

worthy to enter your bridal chamber, like the repentant tax collector, the

sinful woman, and the wise virgins.

RESPONSE: O God, remit my debts and forgive my sins, as I have sinned. I cry out like

that sinful woman. O Lord, who loves mankind, in your glorious coming,

make me worthy to sing praises to You with Your saints. In my grief, I am

lamenting like the prodigal son. My Father, be kind and have mercy on me. I

sinned against heaven and against You. I am not worthy to be called Your

son. Accept me at least as a servant. O merciful Lord, forgive me the sins that

I have committed against You.

LEADER : When the body abstains from food the spirit should abstain from evil, for

the spirit and body should observe lent together. Fasting from food is

fruitless if we do not abstain from evil thoughts. Therefore, O Lord, let Your

grace be with to steadfastly observe the fast in spirit and body.

RESPONSE: O Lord, in this holy lent enable us to renounce all evils, reconcile with your

Godliness, love one another, and to receive mercy and forgiveness of sin. O

Messiah the King, in that great day of your revelation, all generations will

enter and you will judge and separate the good from the wicked; everyone

will move to their appropriate place; when the fiery ocean will roar, may

your mercy protect us.

LEADER : O Lord, open Your great door full of mercy, hear our petitions and have

mercy on us.

RESPONSE: Lent is good, but if anybody observes lent without love it is fruitless.

Prayer is love. If love does not elevate prayer, its wings will be weak. Those

who lack love cannot see God.

Karthavine Kondaduvanum

LEADER : How good it is to give thanks to You, O Lord, and to sing praises to Your

exalted Name; to declare Your loving kindness at the break of the day, and

Your faithfulness during the night.

RESPONSE: O Lord, hearken to our voice at the dawn of the day; and in the morning,

let us be found ready by You. O Lord, absolve and pardon all our sins. O Holy

one, over—shadow Your right hand upon us, and heal all our infirmities for

the sake, of Your eternal Name. Amen.

Feast of the Transfiguration

Feast of the Transfiguration

On August 6th the Holy Church celebrates the feast of the transfiguration of our Lord.  We read about the events in three of the four Gospels, St. Matthew 17, St. Mark 9, and St. Luke 9.

To recap, Jesus took Peter, James and John with Him up on a mountain to pray.  As Jesus prayed, He transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun and His garments became glistening white.  Two men, Moses, representing the Law, and Elijah, representing the Prophets appear and spoke with Jesus. Peter exclaimed, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. Suddenly, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and they heard the voice of God the Father saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.

The glory of the Lord is revealed to the disciples at the transfiguration.  This astounded them so much that they wished they would always remain in that presence.  Peter suggested that they did not need to leave that place, but rather build three tabernacles. Peter realized that the splendor which was revealed to them could not be compared with any other experience he ever had.

How are we in our daily lives?  Do we long to dwell in the presence of God?  Or do we only seek the presence of God in times of need?  As we celebrate this special Feast, can we identify ourselves with David as he writes in Psalms 27:4 “One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, And to inquire in His temple” If not, let us use the spiritual weapons of Scripture, prayer, and fasting to experience the magnificence of His presence.

Feast of St Thomas-July 5th

We celebrate the feast day of St. Thomas the apostle on July 3rd.  Many of us identify St. Thomas as “Doubting Thomas” because he questioned the resurrection of Jesus Christ without physically witnessing Him.  Although he doubted, when Christ reappeared in their midst St. Thomas quickly converted and expressed a pious proclamation and prayer “My Lord and My God!” (St. John 20:24 -28).

An overlooked quality of St. Thomas is his bravery. St. Thomas knowing the fact that the Jews wanted to stone Jesus on their way to Bethany to visit Lazarus, said to the other apostles, “Let us also go, that we may die” (St. John 11:16).

As we celebrate the feast day of St. Thomas, let us emulate these qualities to proclaim “my Lord and my God” and declare our faith in Christ even to death.

May the intercession of St. Thomas be a stronghold for us.

Yours in Christ,
Fr. Bijo Mathew
